How can I make my hair darker without using black hair dye?

My hair is naturally a medium auburn. I want to add some darker lowlights to my hair...like a dark, deep auburn to stick with the same color tones, but it seems like all the darker red color dyes do is add red to your hair (not make it any darker). The only dye that seems to change the tone is black, but I don't want to lose the red color. Any suggestions?How can I make my hair darker without using black hair dye?

Smart you for not wanting to put black in your hair. Black is the most difficult color to remove and or color over. Red's you may not get deep enough color from. Sounds to me you may be trying to achieve this on your own, have you gone to a professional hairdresser yet? Low lights/high lights are super popular and she/he may have just the right remedy to give you the look you desire.

I think red heads are so pretty . I am a dark haired person but omg Kate Winslet and John Cena are really gorgeous.
What about a DARK brown? I would go to a hairstylist if you are able to-they are able to best match it and get a color that is darker.
ummmm.. i would say a dark brown like a rich rich brown//////
