How will it turn out if I dye my black hair?

Hi! I have naturally black hair, and am wanting to dye my hair a deep shade of purple. I don't want to dye it all, and I don't want it to be bright - I just want a slight dark-purple sheen here and there. Ideally, I'd want it to last at least a month.

I've read about how to dye hair, and everything I find involves bleaching your hair first. I was thinking - If I got a bright purple hair dye, and used it in places on my black hair, would that give me the desired effect of very dark purple? I don't know anybody that's tried this, so I don't know how it would turn out! Any input is welcome!

Hey! You actually have a few options, considering it seems that you want a more subtle deep purple highlights. Since you are not wanting anything too dramatic or bright, you don't need to bleach your hair before dying it. Also since you only want it to last for a short period you are in luck with products. Most ';un-natural colors'; only come in a semi-permanent form. I recommend using either Manic Panic or Special Effects hair dyes. They are both natural products, they do not contain peroxides so it is less damaging to hair. They have a rainbow of colors to choose from. If your place the dye on your hair in streaks w/o bleaching you will get subtle purple highlights that will be more noticeable in sunlight. As a note the dye is pretty potent, so be very careful it stains everything. Be sure to rub petroleum jelly along your hairline, ears, etc. to prevent marks of dye on the skins... trust me it is good advice! Anyway, you can find these dyes online, at some beauty supply stores as well as Hot Topic stores. Oh another note... the dye will bleed for quite some time, almost everytime you wash your hair the water will be colored and if you go to sleep with wet hair, be prepared to have a newly dyed pillowcase! i think you should get the purple color you want

then use a booster, that will lighten it

it's not bleach

and you can control how light or dark you hair will turn out

but REMEMBER that once you hair dries it will be even lighter than it appears with the product in it. so keep that in mind when using the booster.

PLUS you can always booster it again if it isn't light enough.

GOOD LUCK!
well i have never tired it, but i have brown hair and i wanted dark brown like almost black hair and after so long it starts to wash out..... just try it!
Well people with black hair have a harder time to dye there hair so i wouldnt go blonde or anything to major i would just do like a brown or some highlights other wise it wont look to good.
i have been through many a hair mistake, please if you are serious about doing it, go to a professional, they have the right products for you. it is worth the extra money to get it done right.
You would defiantly have the best results if you got it done in a salon. But, since that isn't always possible this is what a hair stylist has to say. Do not bleach out your hair to do it, it will make you bright purple when you put the color on. You will just turn an orange color because of the black undertones and then that will cause you to become brighter purple. If you just put the bright purple on top I think you would get more of the sheen look.
go to a professional. they will know how to do that. i dont think theres anything you can buy
it will barely show, trust me i've tried!
if wothout bleaching,he shade u choose for ur hair, after dying,it will be two shades darker, then of that illustrated on shade crd,i mean,if u dye ur hair light brown,,,,,ur result after dying will be dark brown,as for purple shade,,,,,,go for light purple,it will give a dark purple shade on ur hair
I hate guys who dye their hair any color - try a temporary color for Halloween and see if you like it.
if you have really really dark hair it probably won't show at all. if you got your hair highlighten and then dyed the highlights that might work, but i don't think that's what you want. i have really dark hair also. Color pulse from Lorel looks really cool on dark hair. i tried the Plum once on my hair right after i got carmel highlights and it looked awesome. the end result looked like a mix between black, dark dark brown, purple, and a little light brown. the deep purple undertones look very cool. Color pulse lasted for me a little longer than it says on the box (8-10 shampoos) because i had just gotten my hair highlighted. you might want to try it.
