I think nappy hair is beautiful, but society in general feels otherwise. Why is it that nappy Black hair is mocked by mainstream society?
I too think nappy hair is beautiful and you are right society in general does feel otherwise. In modern day culture the ';barbie'; image is most common. It is drilled into children's minds through commercials, tv shows and magazines that in order to be considered beautiful you have to be tall, thin, and tanned with blond hair and blue eyes. Many girls go to extreme measures to obtain this image. By dyeing hair, unnecessary dieting, going to tanning beds or using that horrible lotion that turns you orange. I have even known some girls to take medication that has not been approved by the USDA to increase their height. I have always found these things foolish but, I generally mock main stream society anyway. The reason why so many people believe this is literally brain washing. Our subconscious notices these thing but, our conscious does not thus resulting in people doing stupid things in order to obtain the ';perfect image';.Why is it that nappy Black hair is mocked by mainstream society?
Most people think it looks dirty, because of how course it is.
In today's mainstream media, we are tought to believe that ';good looking hair'; is glossy, smooth and shiny looking, not matted looking.
People look at it and think of hobos, head lice and dirt. They think it doesn't look clean (which is not true in most cases as people do wash their hair) because the media always portrays dirty people in movies as having course looking hair (ie since when do you see a hobo in a movie with sleek styles?).
It's just a media thing, so if you are happy with that hairstyle and find it attractive, then good on you for not buying into media stereotypes!
being from Africa, I find this concept of 'good ';hair and ';bad'; hair to be very strange. where I'm from, we wear our hair in braids, dreads, twists etc, and everyone is cool with it. I think it's the black-is-bad and white-is-good mentality, which in itself shows inferiority/superiority complexes at play.
Mocking nappy black hair makes no sense. we don't mock other races for their premature aging, live and let live
society made it seem like black was wrong and white was right. everyone is to fit into the whtie society's idea of normality and their way of life. to be different is to be a threat. nappy is just black people's (some other races have the ';nappy';hair) natural state. ..lol I think its crazy. i have had dreads for like 2 years now and I wouldn't change it for nothing...as long as Im happy...society can kiss my nappy booteh. yeah I got one of those too.
because society views nappy hair as dirty and unkept. Meaning the person could be lazy or dirty themselves, or thats what they would assume. Mostly because it doesn't meet societies standards of what clean and kept hair should look like. I too find nappy hair sometimes good looking as long as its clean.
Its sort of archaic to mock someone because they have curly hair. I would bet you anyone that does probably has very little money, or is poor in some other aspect that they feel self conscious off, so they mock other people to make themselves feel more beautiful.
Think about that for a minute
I don't think there's anything wrong with nappy hair. In fact, it seems like you can do a lot more with nappy hair than extremely straight hair. I think the only negatives are that you can't wash it everyday and you have to put really strong hair gel/pomade to keep it in place
I don't think there's anything wrong with it, but I know some people don't like it because you can't wash it every day, and us white girls have to wash ours like every day.
Nappy? What is nappy? I don't get that. People don't like brunettes? That seems so silly.
The only hair I have strong negative feelings about is stringy greasy unwashed hair. Bleah.
well it's depends on the person personally i think straight hair's better you can't have a shag with curly hair or let alone nappy
';Nappy headed'; has become sort of mainstream for not taking care of your hair. It only means what you let it mean. Please do not let ignorance affect you:)
If its so beautiful why do so many horses suffer?
