How do you add depth to naturally black hair?

Is there a way to add highlights and depth to black hair, but still keep the hair black? Should I just focus on keeping my hair shiny?How do you add depth to naturally black hair?

I second the dark purple highlights...
Dark blue or purple highlights would look pretty cool.
If its dyed black then i dont think so- if not, sit in the sun for ages then you sort of get dark brown streaks especially in the summer
