I have very dark brown, almost black hair. It's very thick and very coarse. I have a bit of a reddish-brown undertone when the sun hits it just right - what color henna should I use to lighten it somewhat? Hi i have a had a great experience using henna. The best henna a to use for hair is body art quality henna. It will release the most dye is the best in quality. Henna can be used whenever for as long as you want since it is not damaging. To dye your hair from black to reddish brown mix a cup full of henna with enough lemon juice to make it a thick, yogurt consistent paste. Add stuff like walnut powder (gives brown hues), clove powder(gives intense reddish hues), strong black tea of coffee anything you know that naturally stains.
