Im trying to lighten my dyed black hair to a medium brown. How do I do that?

I dyed my hair about 4 months ago black im trying to lighten my hair to a medium brown. I need to know how to do that without going to a salon. Do I just use bleach and then color it, Or just lighten it to the shade I want? About how many levels is that?Im trying to lighten my dyed black hair to a medium brown. How do I do that?
You have to bleach it, then dye itIm trying to lighten my dyed black hair to a medium brown. How do I do that?
You can buy products to strip the dye from your hair. Or else you can try washing your hair with strong anti dandruff shampoo. Washing your hair twice daily with a mix of shampoo and baking soda works too, but it is harsh so follow up with a good conditioner. After 2 weeks of this the colour will fade heaps. Sunlight helps the colour fade too.

You have to be careful with the bleach, it can give strange uneven results over black dye, I've found that black dye is really darkest blue or darkest green.

If you must bleach, do a patch test first and make sure you leave the bleach on long enough to bring it down (depends on the %peroxide but 40 mins max). You can use heat to speed it up, like your hairdrier. You'll need to follow it up with another colour to tone it out eg if your hair goes orange you'll need a brown with an ash base, if your hair goes greenish you'll need a brown with a warm base.

Good luck!
Well its way too late for a hair colour remover to work so your next choice is to dye it a more suitable colour.

Get a good brand of permanent hair colour...something like Loreal Excellence or similar in a light brown shade and then apply as per directions. You won't end up light brown you will end up brown...you need the ';lift'; in the light brown to get rid of the black.

You will need to use something like a level 6 light brown...that should get you pretty darn close to your desired colour. Dont waste time and money bleaching then dying...you shouldnt have much trouble at all.
Only bleach your colored hair, not your re-growth (roots) . I would use a mix of bleach and shampoo (soap cap) and scrub it into your ends. Let it sit for 15 min. Do it twice if necessary until you get to your desired level or slightly lighter. Make sure that you take into consideration the tone your hair will be when you pick out your new hair color.
bleach it

get a protein filler (your hair might need it)

put the filler on 20 minutes before you put your haircolor on

oh and since there's probably gunna end up being orange and red tones in your hair after you bleach it, pick a hair color with a violet base.
you have to bleach it first, but bleaching is VERY harsh, and i learned that the hard way. i know you'd rather dye it yourself, but it pays to leave it to the professionals.
