I would go with a lighter brown... kind of a caramel-y color. To do it any lighter it will look VERY unnatural, and kinda skunk-ish. Unless you WANT unnatural and skunk-ish, lol... (hey, some people LIKE that extreme contrast... and they can have it! lol)

I've got the same problem. My hair is very curly though. I'm going to go with caramel and red highlights. I've found pics online and it looks good. I'm graduating from law school on Sunday and I needed something that looks somewhat professional, yet young at the same time.

Or really dark almost black - blue. Blue would make it look really shiny, and really dark. But if that's not what you want, go with red.
Don't get blond, cuz blonde highlights on black hair looks really unnatural and stripy.
caramel to red shades. Stay away from blonde, it can give you a striped appearance. Also, real light blonde in dark hair looks white, giving you the apperance of gray hair.
