Is it possible to highlight black hair without having it look tacky?

My hair is dark dark dark brown, practically black, and I always wanted to get it highlighted since it's so boring having it one color, but I've been looking at pictures and it seems you can't do it without it being tacky and out-there.Is it possible to highlight black hair without having it look tacky?

my friend had some dark red and golden blonde highlights in her hair and it was black. It looked great on her, but her hair was also really curly, so I'm not sure what it would look like on any other hair type. I'm sure if you talked to your hairdresser about it they would reccomend something. Or maybe you could go a shade lighter with your hair and highlight it then.
If you go to a salon they will be able to do it.
It doesn't matter. It doesn't look tacky.
