How do I dye my black hair another color?

I only want to dye the under layers of my hair purple. But I have been dying my hair black for several months now, and I cant get any color to show in it. My mom says I can only bleach it if there is absolutely no other way to get the purple to show. How do I dye my black hair another color?
Dye means you are adding more colour to what you have. And you cannot ever make it lighter by adding more colour!! Impossible.

You are going to have to remove the black. This is not going to be easy. Black is the very worst possible of all colours to use on hair. Black is most likely a dye you used... dyes are for fabrics and leather, not hair. They do not come out. Most contain dangerous and poisonous metals which are not easily removed.

Do not use a bleach!! That is the worst thing to do. You need a colour remover (all companies make them) to remove the artificial colour. It doesn't matter how many times you have ';dyed'; your hair, since you never put it over previously coloured hair. If you did, well, heaven help you now.

Once you have removed the artificial colour (your hair will be orange/yellow) then you can apply whatever shade you wanted. You may need to lighten your hair further if you are using a bright purple (orange and purple do not mix).

The best thing right now is to have a consultation with a qualified professional hair colourist that can do a proper analysis on your hair to see what can be done. If it's too damaged, any treatment is not possible. They can explain what you can do next to get what you wanted. Normally, there is no charge at most salons for this service. Nothing you use over the black is going to show... the black is always there.. it needs to be removed first. How do I dye my black hair another color?
Yeah, you're going to need a color stripper for that. It's very much like bleaching, and you can get a kit where haircolor is sold if you want to diy. You'll absolutely have to lighten the hair if you want any color to show, purple simply isn't going to be visible over black.
